Specific diagnosis of the disease is made by identification of the virus in the patient's stool.

A sample of diarrhea is needed and a series of tests are run using electron microscopy, and electrophoresis in a laboratory to identify the presence of a rotavirus and which of the three groups of rotaviruses is causing the symptoms.
